watching this movie in a packed theater as a shared experience was honestly what took it to another level for me
at one point in the movie, when the black students union members are discussing whether or not their numbers are great enough to march over to the social club’s racist party, one character just says very simply, in answer, something like:
"the hispanic students’ association is meeting across the hall. asian-american league, too."
the theater ERUPTED into cheers and applause. one row of college students a bit behind us yelled “YASS solidarity!”
and some tears leaked out of my eyes a little. i have no idea whether or not justin simien intended for that to be a *~meaningful moment~* bc the movie moved right along. but for me that was it
